I joined Jonathan Green and friends last night at his monthly Kirtan in Fairfax. It was a lively and soulful celebration in song and dance. This was a first for me, playing electric guitar at a kirtan, and a nice addition to the group sound. Also joining Jonathan was Lisa Gallant on harmonium and vocals, Lyman Spencer on tabla, Kenen Meri on vocals and Trenton Smith on drums and percussion.
The next kirtan is July 25th 8-10pm (4th Fridays of the month)

What is Kirtan? Kirtan is a traditional form of call and response singing, akin to the folk music of India. Traditionally, the sounds chanted in kirtan are in Sanskrit and are the names of the traditional Gods and the Goddesses of Hinduism. In "conscious"kirtan, we practice an East-West fusion, meaning we also include original chants and songs, sometimes in English and speaking to the experience of the Westerner on (or off and on) the spiritual path, and Amma bhajans (devotional songs). Guitar, harmonium & harmonica, tabla accompaniment.

Sounds great! if you are ever playing electric guitar at a kirtan again in the future (in the L.A. area), please contact me and let me know! lara432@yahoo.com
